Babiyachour (Myagdi), Aug. 12: Problem of eroding and landslide has increased due to unsystematic exploitation of river-based materials at Beni area of Myagdi district. Problem of eroding of fertile land and landslide has surfaced after contractors, who have taken permission from the concerned District Development Committee for the extraction of sand, pebbles and stones from Kaligandaki River, started extracting the river-based materials from the bank of Kaligandaki River from Ratnechour of Beni Municipality and Dhodeni to Bhasbhase. Tilak Thapa of Ratnechour Dhodeni said that such risk has surfaced after contractors started extracting the construction materials from the river, flowing from the border of Myagdi and Parbat districts, neglecting the environmental impact.

Rajendra Acharya, a farmer of Dhodeni, complained that the landslide occurred following the eroding of the Kaligandaki River has swept away more than five ropanis of cultivated land this year. Acharya said that landslide has taken place at Jhyaure, Kamere, Chisapani and Lamgara community forest areas as the river bank land caved in following the eroding of the river. Similarly, irrigation, road and drinking water projects have received damages due to this. Planning Officer at the DDC, Myagdi, Keshav Raj Subedi, said that river-based materials shall not be extracted affecting environmental impact. Subedi said that extraction of river-based materials could be stopped and action could be taken if the river-based materials are found extracted against criteria and added that locals should inform the DDC for the same.
